Careers

Build the infrastructure layer of African health.

We are hiring engineers, designers and operations leads in Lagos to make Nigerian healthcare money move faster, fairer and with a clean audit trail. Small team, hard problem, real users.

How we work

A small team, working close to the operator.

We publish a lot about our culture because the culture is the moat. Salaries at Vetra are market-competitive, not top-of-market - the reason people join is that the team + the problem is the best they can find.

High altitude, low ego

We work on hard problems, we disagree in the open, and we ship the best answer regardless of who proposed it. Titles do not settle debates - evidence does.

Written-first culture

Product decisions live in shared docs, not meetings. If it is not written, it did not happen. We would rather trade an hour of writing for a week of alignment.

Slow food, fast software

Focused four-day sprints with the fifth day for deep work, code review and rest. We refuse the always-on rhythm most infra startups grind through.

Ship every week

Every engineer ships to production every week. No feature freezes, no quarterly train models. If your work is not in front of users soon, we did the plan wrong.

Stay close to the operator

Every teammate shadows a claims desk, a hospital front office or an HR benefits lead at least once a quarter. Empathy is a job requirement, not a soft skill.

Boring tech, sharp taste

Postgres, TypeScript, Next.js, Nest, Expo. Boring in the framework, ambitious in the product. We favour proven infra so we can spend our attention on the hard parts.

Compensation & benefits

The practical stuff, up front.

We publish the ranges internally before the interview - and you should ask about them by round two. Ambiguity around comp is not a fair test.

  • Salary + equity

Market-competitive Naira salary, meaningful equity, annual review.

  • Full private health cover

You + primary dependants on a top-tier HMO plan. We are, after all, in this market.

  • Hybrid Lagos office

Two anchor days a week in the office; three flexible. Remote is possible in WAT ±3h.

  • Learning stipend

₦250,000 per year for courses, conferences, books. Approval is a form, not a debate.

  • Sabbatical after four years

One paid month off, no strings. We would rather you rest than burn out.

  • Machine + tools

MacBook Pro of your choice + a discretionary tools budget. If it makes you 5% better, buy it.

Open roles

Roles we are hiring right now.

Every listing has a hiring manager named on the intake call. If nothing matches yet, the general-application row goes to the founders directly.

Interview process

Five steps. Zero mystery.

We publish the shape of the process because we lose good people to companies that surprise them mid-loop. We would rather be dull than surprising.

  1. 1

    Written intro (30 min)

Share a CV plus a one-paragraph answer to "what problem in Nigerian healthcare do you want to work on?". We reply within 5 business days.

  2. 2

    Deep conversation (60 min)

A working conversation with the hiring manager. We dig into two projects on your CV and a Vetra-shaped problem for you to think through out loud.

  3. 3

    Take-home + review (2 hrs)

A single, short take-home tied to the role - a design critique, a schema, a migration plan. Reviewed by two engineers on the team you would join.

  4. 4

    On-site pairing (half day)

You pair with two teammates on a real ticket. We pay for your time. This is when you evaluate us as much as the reverse.

  5. 5

    References + offer

Two reference calls (one you nominate, one we source). Offers arrive with a written scorecard so you know exactly what we saw.

A note on take-homes: we will never ask you to build a real feature Vetra wants to ship. If a take-home has any commercial value to us beyond the interview, we pay for it - and we tell you the going rate before you start.

“Every Vetra week I have paired with an actual adjudicator or a hospital finance lead. That closeness to the operator is the thing I have not found in any other place I have worked.”
